Strange Beginnings of Common Security Technologies

It is not exactly assuring especially when the issue is about security.  Imagine that a lot of the security technologies that we have been accustomed to today were not exactly invented for these purposes. Take for instance the very commonplace, popular and highly in demand camera. Did you know that the first security camera, which was first used in in Germany was mounted on a rocket not for safety reasons but simply to witness a specific event that had very little to do with security. It was, roughly put, for entertainment.

It all changed however at the turn of the early 19th century when the technology was adopted and used in the banking industry and other government establishments as a form of technology for security. And so the CCTV has evolved into the security camera which is being regularly used for the things we are familiar with today.

Apparently, this is true for a lot other things including fingerprint access technology.

Camera, Access and Security

In Singapore, door access technology, aside from the usual camera and security key systems, have become one of the most common security features of homes and other establishments  The fact is that security cams does very little in actually assuring security. In fact recent studies show that there is less than 10% of crimes captured in CCTV have resulted to arrests or ceriman cases. In  my residence alone, despite the many number of thefts and hold-ups that were captured in CCTV cams, very few, or none that I know of, have lead police to the actual perpetuators. In other words, in our tenement, CCTV had done very little to reduce the incidences of crime.

As such, door security have become a better option for many residents. Biometric door access in particular have grown in astronomical popularity since the technology was commercialized and made readily available in local store throughout Singapore. I was even surprised that a number stores which did not even specialize in security utilities sold them. There were even a number of on-line cellular phones retail shops likewise sold CCTV and door access technologies.

Incidental Technologies

At any rate, in Singapore, door access technologies, compared to CCTV and surveillance  technologies have helped prevent many undesirable instances of breaking and entering. The more commonsensical explanation is that door access make it difficult for criminal elements to easy enter ‘soft target’ establishments.

But biometric door access is popular not purely because it is effective. It is popular also because it is cheaper that more sophisticated doo access technology. Of course, the typical fingerprint door access technology have been around for decades but is has also become obsolete. In fact , buying these ‘older’ technologies would prove more costly in the long run because of the difficulty and cost of buying spare parts for repair. More recent technologies like retinal scans have not only provided more sophisticated security but has given cheaper maintenance cost and options. Surprisingly however, these technologies were not created for security purposes but rather as a more sophisticated way of monitoring employee attendance. The earlier versions of these technologies were actually time records of similar to the bundy clock of old.
